Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2 + Dali Sonik 3 + Basik Sub – Flagship Receiver, Compact Danish Speakers

The CINEMA 50 Series 2 is the top of the Marantz CINEMA line: nine amplified channels, 11.4 processing and the complete Dirac Live suite. This set starts it with the speakers that keep a living room looking like a living room – the Dali Sonik 3 standmount with its 7-inch SMC Clarity Cone woofer and the Basik Sub, an 8-inch down-firing cube barely 32 cm on a side. A 2.1 system today, with seven more channels of amplification for the day you add a centre, surrounds and height speakers.

In This Setup

  • Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2 – 9.4-channel 8K AV receiver, 110 W per channel, 32-bit 8-channel DAC, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced, full Dirac Live. Black or Silver Gold.
  • Dali Sonik 3 (pair) – compact speakers with 7-inch SMC Clarity Cone woofer and 29 mm soft dome tweeter. Black Ash, Natural Oak, Walnut or White.
  • Dali Basik Sub – 8-inch down-firing subwoofer, 170 W Class D, sealed cube. Solid Black.

Why This Combination

  • Dirac Live does the integration: the receiver measures the Sonik 3 and the Basik Sub in your room and blends them.
  • Monitor-like precision on films: the Sonik 3 was voiced for coherence, which is exactly what dialogue and effects need.
  • Designed to sit together: Basik Sub finishes were chosen by Dali to stand next to the Sonik series, not hide behind the sofa.

Set price includes all three products; speaker and subwoofer cables are sold separately.

Two speakers now, nine later

Two speakers now, nine later

A flagship Marantz receiver started on a compact Danish 2.1 front end, with seven channels held in reserve.

This set pairs the top receiver in the Marantz CINEMA line with a pair of Dali Sonik 3 standmounts and the Basik Sub, a 32 cm cube that covers the bottom two octaves. It is built for a living room that has to stay a living room: two speakers and a subwoofer either side of the screen, with no ceiling work and no floorstanders. The CINEMA 50 Series 2 amplifies nine channels and processes 11.4, so the same receiver takes a centre, surrounds and heights whenever you want them.

  • 9 amplified channels, 110 W each
  • Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced
  • Four independent subwoofer outputs
  • Room correction with the supplied microphone
  • Grows to 11.4 without changing the receiver
The receiver

Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2

Nine channels of 110 W amplification, 11.4-channel processing and a new high-performance DAC in the Marantz porthole chassis. It decodes every current immersive format, and four independent subwoofer outputs mean bass is managed rather than guessed at.

  • 9.4-channel amplification at 110 W per channel, 11.4 channels in pre-amp mode
  • Six 8K HDMI inputs and three outputs with eARC, 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz pass-through
  • Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced decoding
  • Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with calibration microphone in the box; Dirac Live available as a licence upgrade
  • HEOS multi-room, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Roon Ready, plus a moving magnet phono input

The front pair

Dali Sonik 3

A two-way standmount with a 7-inch Clarity Cone woofer and a 29 mm soft dome tweeter. Dali voiced the Sonik series for coherence rather than showmanship, which is what dialogue and placement need on film soundtracks.

  • 7-inch SMC Clarity Cone paper and wood fibre woofer
  • 29 mm low-loss soft dome tweeter, crossed over at 2,300 Hz
  • 47 Hz to 26 kHz (plus/minus 3 dB), 87 dB sensitivity, 6 ohm nominal
  • Rated for amplifiers from 25 to 150 W
  • Two-way bass reflex cabinet at 20 x 35 x 30.6 cm, for stands, shelves or furniture

The low end

Dali Basik Sub

An 8-inch down-firing woofer and 170 W of Class D power in a cube barely 32 cm on a side. Firing into the floor spreads bass more evenly around the room, so placement is far less critical than with a front-firing box.

  • 8-inch down-firing long-stroke woofer with a paper pulp diaphragm
  • Class D amplifier, 170 W RMS and 220 W peak
  • 33 to 120 Hz on the line inputs, 33 to 200 Hz on the mono LFE input
  • Variable 40 to 120 Hz crossover and 0 to 180 degree phase
  • Four decoupled feet raise the cabinet by 25 mm

Setting it up

  1. Stand the Sonik 3 either side of the screen at ear height, and put the Basik Sub on the same wall, clear of a corner.
  2. Run one pair of speaker cables from the receiver's front left and right terminals to each speaker; the Sonik 3 does not support bi-wiring.
  3. Take one RCA cable from any of the four subwoofer pre-outs on the CINEMA 50 Series 2 to the mono LFE input on the Basik Sub.
  4. Connect sources to the 8K HDMI inputs and the television to HDMI out 1 for eARC.
  5. Set the sub to AUTO, then run Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with the supplied microphone so the receiver sets levels, distances and the crossover.

Questions

What else do I need to get sound out of it?

Speaker cable for the Sonik 3 and one RCA cable for the subwoofer. Neither is supplied, and the Basik Sub ships with its mains lead only.

Is a nine-channel receiver overkill for two speakers and a sub?

No. The Sonik 3 is rated for 25 to 150 W and the receiver gives 110 W per channel into 8 ohms, so the pair is driven properly. The other seven channels simply wait until you add a centre, surrounds or heights.

Can I expand this to Atmos later?

Yes. The CINEMA 50 Series 2 amplifies nine channels and processes 11.4, so a 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 layout only means adding speakers. Full pre-outs are there if you later want external power amplifiers.

Is Dirac Live included?

Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and the calibration microphone are in the box. Dirac Live Room Correction, Bass Control and Active Room Treatment are licence upgrades bought separately.

Which subwoofer output should I use?

Any of the four; they are independent. Use SW1 for the Basik Sub and leave the rest for a second or third subwoofer later.

Where can the subwoofer go?

It is a 31.9 x 29.5 x 31 cm cube standing on 25 mm decoupled feet and firing downwards, which spreads the bass more evenly and makes it more forgiving beside furniture than a front-firing design.

Can I play records through it?

Yes. The receiver has a moving magnet phono input, so a turntable with an MM cartridge connects directly with no separate stage.

Does it stream music as well as films?

HEOS is built in, with AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Roon Ready certification, so the same box handles a film soundtrack and a music library.
